RAPID RESPONSE FOR EDUCATORS: Is ICE activity affecting your school community?

OVERVIEW

Rapid_responseThumb1

Student Reporting Labs is inviting educators to share how increased ICE activity is impacting students, families, and school communities. In two minutes or less, tell us what this moment looks like where you are.

DEADLINE: January 29th.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF

Start your video off with the following introduction:

"My name is NAME (first name only or full name) and I am a TITLE at a school in CITY, STATE."

"My name is Becky and I am a journalism and broadcast teacher at a high school in Denver, Colorado."

SHARE YOUR VOICE:
In two minutes or less, share your answer or reflection to one or more of these prompts:

  • Has there been increased ICE activity in areas around your school community? If so:
    • How does that show up in your day-to-day life at school?
    • How has student or educator mood, attendance or performance been affected?
    • If increased ICE activity is on your mind or the minds or your students, how does that affect you?
    • What is a consequence of ICE activity that people outside those communities where it is happening might not know about?
    • How has your school or broader community been responding?
  • If there has NOT been increased ICE activity in areas around your school:
    • Are students seeing it on the news? How does it come up in discussions at school? What opinions are you hearing?
    • Do you choose to talk about it in your classroom? Why or why not?
  • When you see increased ICE activity in your community or on the news, what is your primary reaction?
  • If you serve a school community that includes many recent immigrants, talk about what that's like. What misconceptions do you see about these communities?
  • Are you or any others in your school or broader community educating students and families on their rights regarding interacting with law enforcement and ICE agents?

ALWAYS RESTATE THE QUESTION IN YOUR ANSWER:
"My school has been giving out cards for students and their families stating their rights when it comes to immigration enforcement." – YES

"My school is giving out cards." – NO
